Beijing Water Cube (Ice Cube) Curling Venue

Project Overview

The Beijing National Aquatics Center, widely known as the “Water Cube,” is one of the iconic venues of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. It hosted major aquatic events including swimming, diving, and synchronized swimming.
During the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, the venue was transformed into the “Ice Cube” to host curling competitions. This innovative conversion was achieved by installing a removable ice-making system and a convertible steel structure above the original swimming pool, allowing the venue to support both aquatic and ice sports.
As the world’s first Olympic venue capable of hosting both water and ice events, the Ice Cube required advanced environmental control technology to maintain stable low-humidity conditions for ice sports operation.
Sunchine provided a high-performance rotary dehumidification solution to support precise humidity control and ensure optimal ice rink conditions.

Customer Challenges

The Olympic ice sports venue required strict environmental control to maintain ice quality and operational stability:

  • Maintaining ultra-low humidity conditions in the ice rink environment
  • Preventing condensation and frost formation on ice surfaces and equipment
  • Ensuring stable indoor climate conditions during large-scale events
  • Reducing energy consumption while maintaining high performance
  • Supporting flexible venue conversion and long-term operation

Our Solution

Our Solution
Sunchine supplied an advanced desiccant rotary dehumidification system designed for low-temperature ice rink applications.
The rotary dehumidifier adopts a continuously rotating honeycomb desiccant wheel made of special heat-resistant composite materials. The structured desiccant media efficiently absorbs moisture from the air during the dehumidification process and releases moisture through the regeneration cycle.
The system includes:

  • 270° dehumidification zone
  • 90° regeneration zone
  • High-efficiency moisture removal
  • Stable low-humidity air supply
  • Intelligent humidity control

This advanced technology provides reliable humidity management for ice rink environments, helping maintain optimal ice conditions and protecting facilities from moisture-related issues.

Project Results

After installation and operation, the system successfully achieved:

  • Stable low-humidity environmental control
  • Improved ice surface quality and operational reliability
  • Reduced condensation and moisture-related risks
  • Efficient operation during major international sporting events
  • Enhanced venue adaptability for multi-purpose use

The project highlights Sunchine’s expertise in providing precision humidity control solutions for world-class sports facilities.
